Show Notes

It’s no secret that local news is in crisis. With ad revenue drying up, what options are on the table if a community wants to keep its local news outlet? Based in Ormstown in the Montérégie West region, The Gleaner, which had been in existence since 1863, pivoted to an innovative community nonprofit format when the media chain owning it wanted to shut down the publication.

In this episode, The Gleaner‘s publisher, Hugh Maynard, discusses the future of local journalism, if The Gleaner’s model can be replicated elsewhere, and how to not confuse it with another paper called The Gleaner in Jamaica.
